While some casual gamers can be a little bemused and don't take kindly to being told their blackjack sucks – sometimes gamers need to go back to basics if they want any chance of regular success. If your new to the game or playing without a strategy – see why it makes sense to wise-up……….
Why not 'just play'
Many recreational gamers first and foremost are looking for light entertainment when they start playing online blackjack. So – what's wrong with simply trying to beat the dealer, with the logic of 'crafting a high value hand near to 21, or whenever you 'think' your hand is hot enough'? Well, while this method can deliver some winning hands and sessions, in the long-term is does what the casino wants – that is, 'maximises their edge'.
For example, maybe the dealer-up card is an 8, and you have 16 – what should you do, hit or stand? Well, if you play with no strategy, the answer to that question probably varies depending on your gut instinct, run of luck and your general mood. What's more, would you approach change if the dealer held instead of 8 – maybe, maybe not? Well, this is exactly why strategy gaming is the way to approach blackjack – because it helps to eliminate the doubts and makes moves based on pure statistical facts. For instance, in the example above (dealer-up 8 versus your 16) – a classic blackjack strategy would advise you to hit until you hand is 17 or higher (or a soft 18), if the dealer has 7 or more.
In fact, by combining this ruling with three other classic blackjack tips, you can expect to limit the house edge to 1.5% - nothing amazing but most definitely a step in the right direction. Give them a try next time you play online blackjack…..
Tip 2. If the casino up-card is six or lower, hit until your combo value is 12 or more
Tip 3. Double-down if your hand is 10 or 11 and the casino has 9 or lower Tip 4. Split aces and 8's
If a 1.5% edge to the casino is pretty mediocre, a 0.5% edge starts to look much more enticing – and it's a key to enhancing your winning potential when playing online blackjack.
Such an edge can be created by applying a full basic blackjack strategy. You can find strategy charts online, print them off and learn them at your own pace.
With a little investment in time and patience – mundane recreational blackjack soon takes on a whole new light – boosting both your intrinsic entertainment, winning chances and value for money (you bank stretches further, even if you lose!). So – there are an array of clear reasons for not simply trying to beat the dealer with a high value hand, and instead making moves based on statistical power.

Blackjack is arguably the finest classic casino game available; skill-responsive, easy to pick-up and potentially rewarding with the combination of luck and skill. However, give your blackjack power a kick-start with our essential tips……..
Tip 1: Apply the four basic laws of blackjack
Most people know that the aim of blackjack is to beat the dealer's hand score – by hitting for cards and standing when you're happy with your score and as close to 21 as possible. However, it's a shame that many gamers know the aim of the game – because they often play it only with this aim in mind; in other words, they think they can beat the dealer regularly by simply forming high scoring hands. The truth is a little bleaker unless you happen to get lucky on a regular basis, because the game will always tend to win eventually, if you don't pay it respect and apply some statistical moves. As an example, blackjack is proven to react more favourably by just applying 4 simple laws – thought to reduce the house edge to around 1.5% when used consistently…..
Law 1. Hit until you hold 17+ or soft 18, and the dealer has at least 7
Law 2. If the house up-card is 6<, hit until your combo scores 12+
Law 3. Double-wager if you hold 10 or 11 and the casino has a 9< Law 4. Split aces and 8's only
Even if you don't really desire to play blackjack for anything other than low staking fun and recreation – do yourself a favour and apply these tips.
Tip 2: Play basic blackjack strategy
The logical progression from applying the tips above to your blackjack sessions – is to start playing the game with the full 'basic strategy' rules; in effect they're the proven statistical rules that help to reduce the typical house edge, to around 0.5% when applied correctly. So – get yourself a good strategy chart off the web, print it off and enhance our fun and potentially your success rate. Once you can apply basic strategy without even consulting the card – you can call yourself an intermediate blackjack player!
Tip 3: Spread your blackjack gaming
According to recent research, casual blackjack players who spread their blackjack banks between 2 or more casinos, got better results than players only gaming at one casino. It makes sense really – protecting you from one bad session and acting like insurance. Experiment with the idea of playing at a few online casinos with your budget, and analyse your blackjack results.
Tip 4: Level stakes wins the day
When applying blackjack strategy to your gaming, it's important to play consistently with level stakes; otherwise you risk being negatively affected by fluctuating luck from session to session. By playing with same stake level through both hot and cold sessions, the effects of your strategy can be analysed to full effect. In contrast, you success level when playing with random credits is pretty useless when it comes to knowing how skilled you really are.
